Social Inequity Leads to Mental Health Disorders?

Social disparities in health is becoming a topic of major importance. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), our social, economic, and physical environments are linked to both mental health disorders and chronic physical health issues. WHO also reports social inequalities are associated with an increased risk of many common mental health disorders such as:

  • Depression
  • Bipolar Affective Disorder
  • Schizophrenia and other psychoses
  • and more

Social determinants of health and mental health go hand-in-hand with health equity. The Latinx population is strongly affected in this aspect. So, PASOs is collaborating with the SC Department of Mental Health to mitigate the adverse effects of social inequity by providing services that are culturally and linguistically appropriate. We also plan on starting a support group with six sessions to empower women, teach them resiliency strategies, self-esteem, and much more.
