District 2 Packs for Kids

12 Sep, 2016  /  by Upstate Family Resource Center

picture1This past month, we have seen our fair share of community need. With the school year beginning, the rush for registration and school supplies are hitting local families all across Spartanburg. *“With the growing demand of quality school supplies per child, families spend an average of $131 on supplies like notebooks, folders, pencils, clothing and backpacks.” Within one week we were able to give over 370 kids school supplies and backpacks while also giving families a chance to see the great help that the UFRC does for their community. As seen with the actual cost of school supplies and a growing poverty rate, families’ struggle with simple necessities for their children’s school year like crayons or a lunchbox. This process alleviates some of the financial burden that these families’ face on a day to day basis.

We would like to give thanks to all the wonderful organizations and surrounding area churches that made this year’s school drive possible. With donations from Covenant UMC, New Beginning UMC, Boiling Springs First Baptist, St Margaret’s Episcopal, Foster’s Grove Baptist Church, Northbrook Baptist Church United Way, Morgan Stanley, Broad River Electric and more, we were able to provide school supplies to our local children. This year’s drive was a prime example of what our very own community partners can do and how it impacts lives of families every day in our own back yard. We hope to continue our success in giving while we still see people picking up more and more supplies on a daily basis.
