There is an old saying that relays this piece of wisdom: “You can’t really understand another person’s experience until you’ve walked a mile in his shoes.” In GED, we see a lot of “shoes” come into our classroom. Some bring people who have just completed a 3rd shift job. Others bring single moms who are determined to make better lives for their children. Still others bring teenagers who didn’t fit in a traditional high school setting. It’s a privilege to meet them all, get to know their stories, and to help prepare them to pass the GED exam.
We’ve enrolled over seventy students in the 2015-2016 school year at UFRC. To date, fourteen students have earned a high school equivalency diploma by passing Common Core aligned standards on the GED. Four subjects are included on the test: Reasoning through Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and Mathematical Reasoning. Not only does the GED offer a second chance to high school dropouts, but graduates are truly college and career ready once they’ve passed the exam. The GED is quite rigorous, but we meet students where they are and build upon their current skills.
As the center strives to strengthen families in our community, education opens the door for students to find higher paying jobs or to pursue higher education. Two certified teachers work with students one-on-one or in small groups to master concepts. Day and night classes are available to suit people’s schedules.
